Succulents
If you have a sunny to partly sunny porch, not a lot of time to tend flowers, and want a plant that does not require a lot of care or watering, succulents are the plants for you. They are excellent plant choices for both their beauty and hardiness. They seem to prefer the harsh conditions that would make other plants give up the ghost! They don't mind being overcrowded (in fact, they prefer it), don't mind if you forget to water them (they really wish you would . Just stick them out in the dew), and can survive a host of weather conditions (just leave them on your porch all year round and forget them) and will come back each year and even multiply! Phew! That was a run-on for sure and a mouthful, but there is so much to be said about these marvelous plants!
My favorite succulents are "Hens and Chicks." I have the green type (anyone know what they are called?) for the most part. I have some on my porch in pots, some in a whiskey barrel at the end of my sidewalk mixed in with some other succulents and flowers, and some in a bird bath in the full sun. I notice that these change colors according to how much sun and/or water they get. I think they are so pretty when they are mixed with other succulents or just very crowded and surrounded with round river stones.
I divide and repot my succulents each year and give some away as gifts. I like to give these away as well as other perrenial flowers and bulbs as a "legacy." I have some Hens and Chicks that were my moms that I have had for 15 years! Every time I look at them, I think of her. That is why they are the perfect gift. When you give a friend a perennial such as a succulent, it is like giving them a piece of yourself... Afterall, you tended it on your porch or in your garden for many years. Then, when it comes back from year to year for them, your friend will see it and be reminded of you and your friendship. That is the best gift of all; a "living" gift.
Does anyone else like to give plants as gifts? Does anyone have any plants or flowers with a story?
