Keeping and Spending By Edgar A. Guest
These I would have him spend: Silver and gold, Serving some useful end, Playing the man and friend 'Till he grows old.
Thus let him give away All that I leave, Spending as best he may, Comforting, day by day Hearts when they grieve.
But this I'd have him keep Down to the last, Faith when the road is steep, Faith when his eyes must weep, Holding it fast.
Silver and gold are naught, Those he may spend, But howsoever wrought, God grant the faith I taught Be his to the end.
