decorating with antiques
To me, the interesting and cozy aspects about one's home are the pieces that share a family's history. I always enjoy looking at a family's photos, artwork or collections. It is recommended to display some family photos at all times and to change them occasionally for interest. And go ahead and display those paintings and or drawings your kids made! They don't have to be Picasso for you or your friends to enjoy them.
These are the decorating pieces that add interest and warmth to the home, because they are straight from the family's heart. Collections are the same.
I have a collection of milk glass that once belonged to my mom. I went to various antique stores for years and picked up another piece here and there and now it is difficult to remember exactly which pieces were hers and which are my finds. But not to worry. It is no longer just my mom's collection... It is now "our" collection! I also collect seashells when we are fortunate enough to be able to visit the coast. These shells bring me much happiness throughout the years as they remind me of our great family times spent at the beach!
But it is not just your own collections and memories that can bring warmth and a sense of history to the home... I find that antique stores are a great place to purchase a beautiful and unusual indoor "plant stand" such as an old organ stool or sewing machine! I love to use old wash stands for dressers and old crocheted linens to dress up coffee tables. I've heard some say on the TV decorating shows that they like to avoid things that evoke a sense of "grandma's" house, but I just simply don't agree! That is what I find so cozy and comforting... What is wrong with a sense of history in the home? To each her own, but to me, "modern" can be cold and forgetful... The simple country charms of decorating with history can be so much more welcoming, just like one has come home after being away for a very long time!
